I get the most flack from anybody but I don’t do anything illegal.
She’s not a bad person. You see she cursed and apologized for it. She’s obviously still adorable, and hasn’t gone full blown crazy.
Yo I’ve got a lot of time for Miley as a person, even if i’m not a huge fan of her performance ethics- she seems like a nice enough girl.
Being redeemed by your likable character is a white privilege in the music business.
The people whose culture she’s appropriating to further her music career wouldn’t be able to slap on double denim and go be a loveable girl next door on a talk show and have you commoners reblog the gifs with loving comments separating them from their ‘performance ethics’ and admiring them for apologizing for swearing. You’ve got a lot of time for Miley as a person? Good, because the media is counting on it and they’re going to do their best to sell her to you.
When a white person appropriates another culture for their ‘art’ and they’re more successful with it than the people from that culture it isn’t because they’re better, it’s because they’re more palatable to white people. They’re relying on and taking advantage of deep rooted systems of racism for their success, and it’s success that they’re taking from others that are affected by those systems. That’s a problem. And if you’re going to reblog it and talk about how you still find them very palatable, then you’re a part of that problem.
I mean what do you think of Missy Elliott as a person? Azealia Banks? Rye Rye? Dominique Young Unique? What are they like as people? How did they come off on Leno last night? What was their Disney show like? How’s their brand machine spinning them these days?
Miley Cyrus is a brand. And she’s a successful brand because she’s white and beautiful and because she’s copied the popular aspects of another culture. You’re not liking her as a person. You’re buying her.
Why did this even have to turn into a race thing? Keep your stupid cultural essays to yourself, I’m gonna go buy another copy of Bangerz.
